Veteran Suicide and PTSD Outreach

Every Veteran suicide is a tragic outcome and regardless of the numbers or rates one Veteran suicide is too many. We feel the responsibility to continue to spread the word throughout VA that “Suicide Prevention is Everyone’s Business.” Although we understand why some Veterans may be at increased risk, we continue to investigate and take proactive steps. The ultimate goal is eliminating suicides among Veterans. (Source: VA Suicide Prevention Program, Facts about Veteran Suicide April 2011).

Veteran Homelessness and Employment Outreach

While only 8% of Americans can claim veteran status, 17% of our homeless population is made up of veterans. In 2010, the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) estimated that on any given night there were 76,000 homeless veterans sleeping on American streets.

• Veterans between the ages of 18 and 30 are twice as likely as adults in the general population to be homeless, and the risk of homelessness increases significantly among young veterans who are poor.

Unemployment rate for veterans who have served since 9/11 stood at 10 percent, with 246,000 out of work. That's the same rate as it was a year ago, and it's a higher jobless rate than it is for non-veterans, after adjusting for age and demographic factors, recent veterans are still having trouble finding work.
